Sunday, September 1st was an eventful day. It was the middle of the Labor Day weekend, and while we were preparing for a potential hurricane in our area with accompanying gas shortages, we were also having a congregational meeting to vote on extending a call to me as an Associate Pastor here at Hope Lutheran Church. We needed 95 members present for a quorum, and the above events had me worried about the turnout. As many of you know, I had a nightmare a couple of weeks before that we were one person short.
As I so often must remind myself – trust God in all things.
After seeing 481 members show up for the meeting (astounding enough!) and then vote unanimously to extend a call to me, I find myself struggling to find appropriate words of thanks. It was overwhelming, humbling, and exhilarating – as well as many other feelings, for which words are inadequate. From the bottom of my heart, I thank God, and you, for allowing me to serve as your Associate Pastor in our joint ministry in the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Last week’s meeting exceeded my wildest expectations and is just one more indication to Anita and me that we are at the right place at the right time. Hope Lutheran Church is our home.
At the conclusion of last week’s meeting, I made a statement that I often make to the bride and groom at weddings: As much as the wedding day might seem like the end of all the planning and work, it is really just the beginning of a life of commitment together. The September 1st meeting and this weekend’s installation are just the beginning of my commitment here – the beginning of my call to listen to the voice of God in service to God’s people.
Our journey together is only beginning. And I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us in our time together!
Blessings and God’s peace be with you all,
